A while ago… well… a few months ago, I should say, I was nominated by Frostilyte to participate in a new tag post thing. And then I thought I’d do it later… and then I forgot about it… and now it seems like a good day to post about that, so uh… here! 

What’s this tag about?

Well, we’re doing the Gamer Motivation Profile by Quantic Foundry, which is a survey that I need to take and then I essentially examine the results of the said survey by answering several questions. The survey is supposed to describe different traits in my gaming behaviour and also recommend games to me based on my answers. 

What are the results? Share the link, headline and the two motivation model graphs you received.

My Gamer Motivation Profile is Social, Story-Focused, and Creative. Naithin posted a doc in Frostilytes post (just check out the comment section as I don’t know to link that specifically) that essentially explains what all of this means… but I feel like I’m even more confused now that I’ve read the doc. I guess “Social” means that I like PvP and PvE stuff with other players, which is true, I guess. I’ve been playing a lot of League of Legends, MHW and Destiny 2, although I’ve only mentioned the former two in the survey. The “Story-Focused” aspect is probably about plots and characters in games: If I hate the characters, I don’t really like the game – or for instance in League: I like Lissandra because of her lore and I wouldn’t play her if she was just another run-off-the-mill-character that has to avenge her father/brother/kids/parents/master/etc.
And as far as creativity goes… I like customizing stuff, I guess? Whatever.

How do you feel about your survey results?

I partly answered this one in the first question already. Overall, I guess that it makes sense. I do enjoy playing with and against other players. I also care about getting better about the game but more about the fun/the experience, resulting in a below average Mastery score. I noticed that quite often I need to have some Action but not always, so I would have thought that the Action score is a bit higher and as far as Creativity goes, I’m not the most creative… I guess that high score happened due to the questions that I answered about being able to (re)create a character. I do enjoy being the bad guy, which is why my “Destruction” Score is so high (58%) and I do enjoy a bit of a Challenge and Fantasy, I guess, but I would have personally said that Strategy and would be a bit more up there.

Which category is the most and which one is the least accurate?

I guess “Strategy” was the least accurate with its 49%. I mean, Destruction is all the way up there at 58% but I’d say that I overall enjoy Strategy aspects in games more than the fact that I can destroy pots in a house. Similar thing goes for “Story” and “Challenge”. If I get bored from the story or from the difficulty, I stop playing games or start to skim through or I get cocky and do something stupid. Hence, these are probably the most accurate. I do play a lot of Roguelikes and I do try to get better at certain games, so as long as the game is fair, I enjoy a challenges a lot more than story-aspects. So, I guess I’d rather put “Challenge” up a bit more while putting down the story-part, despite them (probably) being the most accurate.

Are there any major exceptions to your typical gaming motivations?

I guess “Creativity” and “Community” aren’t really right there. While I enjoy playing with other people, I don’t want to be too social. Same goes for creative stuff, while I do enjoy creating and planning out a character or a city or base, I don’t necessarily like creative tasks as much as this survey would lead to believe. In that sense the questions might be a bit flawed as they don’t really allow you to discern between “building things and designing something” and “creating your own character and changing a skin”, which I would call two different things.

Do any of these motivations carry over to your non-gaming life? If so, how?

I’d say “not really”. I’m often quite lazy and I tend to procrastinate a lot, so “Achievement” and Mastery” can’t be that close to “average”/50%. I suck at creative tasks (apart from writing, I guess?) and my social skills aren’t the best eitherr. I’m not too social either… I mean it all depends. I don’t actively search for people to talk to but I also don’t necessarily want to be all alone… The only thing that would be quite accurate would be “Action”, as I suck at sports and physical activities, haha.

Which games in your experience best satisfy your gaming motivations and how do they compare to the “suggested games” list from the questionnaire’s follow up page?

I really like RimWorld, Hollow Knight and Monster Hunter World right now as these games have the right amount of story, challenge and creative activity for me to basically not get bored for quite some time.
Suggest games wise, my recommendations feature “Heroes of the Storm” in the “Popular Games” section, which must be a mistake. I do enjoy it as well as Guild Wars 2, Warframe, and the Pokémon franchise but I wouldn’t go so far as to say that I’d try out HotS any time soon – especially due to the fact that they nerfed a ton of my favourite chars. Whatever.

Overwatch would be another one of those cases where the game is actually good but Blizzard screwed them up for me… as a Tank/Support-Main I hate the fact that essentially all characters are Damage-Dealers while you’re stuck with only 6 characters as a Support or Tank, though one of them is already taken by your teammate. Symmetra, Roadhog, Mei, Torbjörn, and Bastion for instance used to have either their own “specialist” class or they were formerly in other classes… but now they are all DDs, rendering the game variety quite unenjoyable to me. After all, I’d either have to queue up for a few minutes to play DD (as everyone wants to play that) or I play something where I’m limited to essentially only two or three heroes or where I’m forced to play something else if Ana gets picked away. I don’t like Overwatch anymore.

We tried to do the Gardens of Salvation raid the other day and I thought that this place looked pretty!

Civ V and World of Warcraft are interesting recommendations here but I’m not too keen on getting a subscription service going right now and I planned on getting into the Civ games anyways (wishlist and all of that).

The “balanced” recommendations feature a lot of the previously mentioned as well as Cities: Skylines (which I already like) and ARK: Survival Evolved (which I found interesting concept-wise but I don’t really care about it all that much, especially as none of my friends play it). “Star Wars: The Old Republic” is probably a good title if you’re a Star Wars fan… which I’m not exactly.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn is a good game. I was in the closed beta ages ago and really liked it there but didn’t play it afterwards… but I might get into it some time soon. And Fire Emblem Heroes got recommended to me, too, despite it not being a PC game and despite me having said that I don’t play on anything other than PC. Maybe I’ll have to get a Switch afterall… I mean, I already know that I enjoy the Fire Emblem games but the newer titles might be a lot more different.

And last but not least, Quantic Foundry is recommending Starbound and 2048 in the Niche-Section. While Starbound is cool, I guess, I don’t really have too many friends to play it with and I wouldn’t really play it all on my own… 2048 on the other hand gets boring quite quickly. The Total War series are great, from what I have seen, but I can’t afford them right now (Hence wishlisted and waiting for a sale). Fallout Shelter is a game that I’m aware of… but I got quite bored of it when I last played it… and then there’s also Dragon Ball Z Dokkan Battle which is not my cup of tea as I have no clue about Dragon Ball Z.. oh and Pillars of Eternity which has been wishlisted for quite some time.

The recommendations weren’t really all that great and I was hoping to get some more Indie titles but I did sadly not get any of those… what a bummer.

I hate metaslaving

Whenever games get competitive, something called a “meta” develops over time and hence certain “successful” developments or patterns in the way people play a game appear more often, resulting in a (usually) everchanging meta.

In League of Legends, I usually play in the Support role. My champion pool is quite varied with a lot of beefy tanks that can engage quite heavily on the enemies like Nautilus, Thresh, Leona and Bard… and with a lot of cool enchanters that empower and heal allies, preventing them from dying, like Nami, Sona, Lulu and Bard… and with a lot of strong mages that are able to whittle down the enemies’ HP-bars before fights or even kill them on your own – like Morgana, Brand, Xerath and Bard!

Overall, I really enjoy a lot of support champions but sadly, the meta is a thing and therefore you usually only play certain champions on each role. In the support role in this season of League of Legends, the meta is basically consisting of a meta of the holy “Tank-Trinity”: Leona, Nautilus and Thresh. You pick one of these champions and you win (if you know what you’re doing)… and while I know what I’m doing with these champions, I don’t really enjoy playing them as much as the mages and enchanters in my champion pool right now and hence, I come to my point:

I hate metaslaving.

Being a “slave” to the meta is a bit strong but a lot of people who try to climb in League have to resort to doing it. They need to stick to the champions with the highest pick and win rates and have to play these champions to essentially win games.

Vladimir, eh, don’t like him all that much, although I should like him, I guess?

A good example for this would be Mid Lane where you either pick Kassadin or Vladimir… or you ban them. They are really strong with no counterplay whatsoever and are essentially face-roll-champions that don’t get nerfed no matter what happens. (Sorry for the rant.)

If you belong to the 0.50% of League of Legends’ player-base that plays Tristana Mid, then I’m quite sorry to let you know that you will lose with a probability of 41.91% (Most champions have a win rate between 45 to 55% unless they are not balanced for that role). If you are a Tristana-Midlane-One-Trick-Pony you might enjoy this kind of playstyle but you probably will have it hard to actually make this playstyle work and climb efficiently. Instead, you’ll have to resort to metaslaving and play either something broken (not gonna rant again) or something that is actually good right now in Mid-Lane (not judging) like Galio, Zoe, Talon or Zed (just according to win rates compared to pick rates).

And I guess not everyone likes League of Legends, so I guess I could and actually should talk about metaslaving in other games.

In Destiny 2, for instance, I really enjoy using double-primary-ammo with Storm and Stress (or rather Sturm und Drang) but people don’t really do that… and well, I am not that good in Crucible as I am using a sidearm and a hand cannon (fair enough).

If I don’t use those two weapons, I usually go for Bug-Out-Bag and a shotgun, which works, I guess… but there are weapons in the meta that are a must-have for anyone who wants to climb fast.

In card games, a lot of the times, only certain decks with certain cards in it work. If you are missing one card or two from having the perfect deck, you either grind it out until you have it – or you just replace the missing cards with something similar. My Quest Shaman, in Hearthstone, has been meta for quite some time… sadly, ever since the dragons came out… I can’t really use it and need some extra cards, which is rather annoying, in my opinion.

Couldn’t be bothered to take or search for a screenshot of my quest shaman deck, so I took this one instead since I like Hollow Knight.

But then again, I don’t play games to conform to a meta. I play games to have fun. And I don’t want to play those tank supports, I don’t want to use the Revoker or Bygones in D2, and I don’t want to grind some stupid dragon cards that will get replaced soon anyways.
But it’s something that can’t be changed anyway, as a meta always develops with every change that comes out and every effort to make PvP or PvE more balanced… and that’s something that I don’t like but I guess I can’t change it and it’s just how things go.

Destiny 2 – Getting back into the grind!

Destiny 2 has been one of those games that I play every now and then but never could truly get into. I mean, in December (when I first started playing it) I ended up spending around 90 hours in Destiny 2, while I’ve only accumulated 37 more hours in the past four months.

But just a few weeks ago, I picked up again and played through Shadowkeep and when I got into contact with some friends about my build and my favourite weapons, they noticed that I got a god-roll of sorts for my Bug-Out-Bag.

Honestly, I just liked the feel of it and kept it along the whole time as it’s great for ad-clear and does a ton of damage, not to mention that it deals solar damage and can take down wizards and the weird solar-shield cabal-guys with one magazine only (if not even less).

Overall, I’ve been a bit lucky with a few exotic drops like the Bombardiers in the Forge and just recently I also found another exotic that I may use instead of the Bombardiers.

Well, for anyone wondering: I’m running a Middle-Tree Solar-Hunter (Way of Thousand Cuts) with the incendiary grenade, triple jump and gambler’s dodge.

Essentially this allows me to throw a whole bunch of flaming knives at enemies which is just a ton of fun. When you set people on fire (usually with either the melee ability or the grenade), your melee ability and class ability cooldowns are ticking down a lot faster, allowing you to throw more knives and roll more. Now, my class ability also recharges my melee ability, so I essentially go C -> V -> C or rather Melee -> Class -> Melee and at that point usually have my class ability/V back again.

The Bombardiers also drop a “parting gift” aka a grenade on the spot where I use my Class ability (V), hence increasing my DPS quite a bit. Overall this build is a lot of fun, especially since destroying burning enemies recharges “Knife Trick” (my Melee/C) more quickly as well…

The assassin’s cowl is not only handy but also looks rather cute, doesn’t it?

And just recently (after finishing the Shadowkeep campaign), I received the “Assassin’s Cowl”, a hunter-class helmet that essentially grants me healing and invisibility whenever I get in an empowered Arc, Solar or Void melee final blow or when I use my finishers. Hence, I can now turn invisible instead of using the bombardiers and this helmet also gives me more mobility (which means a lower cooldown on my class ability/V) than my current helmet.

So, once I get some better shoes, I’ll go with this exotic helmet instead and try to min-max around mobility and mods, once I’ve reached the light cap of 1010! Right now I’m only sitting at 955, although I just need to get back to the grind.

And I haven’t even gotten into the exotic weapons that I could use with this build. For instance, I’m running Bug-Out-Bag with a Reload-Masterwork as my secondary weapon and a god-roll Interference VI with Swashbuckler and Clown Cartridge, Quick Launch and Spike Grenades as my third weapon. Apparently, that’s really good and allows for the highest possible DPS in the game, which is going to come in quite handy during raids. Sadly that means that I won’t be able to use my beloved Hammerhead or my Whisper of the Void as much as I’d want to… but whatever. Whisper is still great against boss fights, though I’d have to see how much better my Interference VI is.

If I’m going to use these two weapons that leaves me with either no exotic or with double primary ammo and a Monte Carlo! The Monte Carlo is an exotic auto rifle that reduces my melee ability cooldown (yes, even more) and grants a chance to fully charge my melee ability with each kill (yes, fully charge chance!) Isn’t that great?

The only problem with that is the fact that I don’t make use of any Secondary Ammo, so I may go with no Exotic at all and instead use my Hawthorne’s Field-Forged Shotgun that dropped today and use this one instead – again, because of some great rolls! It has got the Surrounded and the Underdog trait, resulting in me dealing bonus damage with it when there are three or more enemies in close proximity and me getting a boost to reload speed as my health gets lower.

Usually, when I’m surrounded with by enemies with my glass cannon hunter here, I end up rather low rather quickly, which is why this weapon might be quite optimal. I could use the shotgun to get up close to a lot of stronger enemies, get low, and then afterwards kill some ads with my knives to receive healing and invisibility to get back to safety, with the help of Assassin’s Cowl!

Overall, I’m rather happy with the min-maxing and customization that is possible in Destiny 2 and I really like the characters, the story and the gunplay… so I might get back into it now that I know that my luck with these weapon-rolls is kind of big…

As far as the “Double-Primary vs. Hawthorne’s” argument goes… I might just need to grind up Izanagi’s Burden or aim for the Chaperone or the Arbalest to get a kinetic secondary weapon for my build. Arbalest is great for shielded combatants while the Chaperone just deals a ton of damage as far as I know… and Izanagi’s is great against Raids, I’ve heard, so I’m looking forward to getting that one… I also like snipers so that’s a win-win-win-win, I presume? (Exotic, Secondary, Sniper, good in Raids)
